Top Five comics of 2019

Top Five comics of 2019

Is this list a little late? Yes, it probably is, but I really wanted to talk about these comics. I must preface this by saying that I have not read every comic of 2019, as there are far too many comics each year. In addition, I read primarily Marvel and DC comics. Also, the list is based on my level of enjoyment with each comic regardless of their critical or financial reception.

5. War of Realms: Punisher/Punisher Kill Krew

Some people may consider this cheating but the two series are one continual story, with the same writer, Gerry Duggan (Arkham Manor; Deadpool). During the War of Realms, Frank tries to protect a hospital as they try to transport their patients to New Jersey and away from the battle in New York. Post the War of Realms he attempts to hunt down all of the beings that slaughtered the parents of a group of orphans. Two simple premises which have been enhanced due to the influx of rest of the 10 realms within Thor’s comics, and how the Punisher reacts to all of the different monsters and races. The two artists Marcelo Ferreira (Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man; Morbius) and Juan Ferreyra (Green Arrow; Colder; Black Panther: Kill Monger) depict the various creatures and scenarios in both an epic and horrific manner all of which are beautiful to see. It is the best example of what a tie-in to a comic event should be.

4. Chip Zdarsky’s Daredevil

Chip Zdarsky Daredevil

Chip Zdarsky’s (Howard the Duck; Marvel’s Two in One) Daredevil is as much Matt Murdock’s comic as it is the Kingpin’s comic, a deconstruction of the two characters as their journeys are mirror images of each other. It is another fantastic run in a long line of brilliant runs for Daredevil as a character, as it manages to challenge all of Daredevil’s beliefs both religious and personal, whilst Kingpin realises that he is not as in control as he first thought he was. In addition, the artists, Marco Checchetto (Life Zero; Star Wars: Obi-Wan and Anakin), Lalit Kumar Sharma (Planet of the Apes: When Worlds Collide; World War Two: Under the Shadow of The Lewis Helfand), Jorge Fornes (Batman Secret Files; Marvel’s Doctor Strange Prelude), are fantastic and bring high tension to every scene. It is a must-read and another great comic from Chip Zdarsky.

3. DCEASED

DCEASED

Tom Talyor (Injustice; X-Men Red) has a habit of killing off the denizens of the DC universe, from Earth 2 to Injustice, he probably has a higher death count than Darkseid. DCEASED is on a whole new level of death and destruction. In 6 issues the trinity is gone along with the Earth, he managed to bring the heroes to a new low and some glimpses of hope and happiness. Trevor Hairsine’s (Divinity trilogy; X-Men Deadly Genisis) art perfectly captures the bleakness of the whole series. It is the best Elseworlds book DC has produced of 2019.

2. Scott Snyder & James Tynion IV’s Justice League (2018-2020)

Scott Snyder Justice League

Scott Snyder (Batman; Wytches) and James Tynion IV (Justice League Dark; Something is Killing the Children) have brought the Justice League to the multiversal level, with their actions defining the very fabric of reality. In 2019 alone they have redefined both Martian Man Hunter and Lex Luthor, escaped Hawkworld; travelled to both the future and the past, explored the sixth dimension, unified the three celestial beings and formed the largest Justice League in all of DC history all to defeat the very creator of the DC multiverse. To say this superstar writing team go to the ends of the Earth and back is too small scale, they have destroyed and rebuilt the rules of the DC multiverse. Jorge Jiménez (Earth 2 Society; Supersons) art is amazing and sells the epic scale, the comics would be lesser without it.

1. House and Powers of X

House and Powers of X

House and Powers of X are the perfect jumping-on point for and lapsed X-Men fan and newcomers alike. It points the mutants in a new direction for years to come, whilst simultaneously condensing X-men history into its core beats. Jonathan Hickman (Fantastic Four; Avengers; East of West) has redefined the Marvel landscape once again and makes it look easy to boot. Pepe Larraz (Extermination, Star Wars: Kanan) and R.B. Silva (X-Men Gold; Secret Six) are stunning in their art and make it hard to look away from the page as you want to take in every beautiful image they have drawn. It is a must-read for any Marvel fan as it will dictate the Marvel landscape for years to come.

Top five films of 2019

Top five films of 2019

Is this list a little late? Yes, it probably is, but I really wanted to talk about these films. I must preface this by saying that I have not seen every film of 2019, as there are far too many films each year. Also, the list is based on my level of enjoyment with each film regardless of their critical or financial reception.

HM: El Camino

El-Camino-Breaking-Bad

I will fully admit that El Camino is an honourable mention due to the nostalgia of Braking Bad. However, this Neo-Western is tense from start to end as you watch Jessie try to find enough money to escape New Mexico. The film is filled with cameos from start to end, with everyone bringing back the quality they had in the original series. It is a fantastic cap to Jessie’s story and satisfying throughout.

HM: Us

US

Us is Jordan Peele’s second horror film after Get Out, and is a brilliant follow up to his horror debut. Lupita Nyong’o’s performance is spellbinding as she leads her family to find safety, even though they learn nowhere is safe. Even though the twist is telegraph from the beginning of the film, it does not distract from the story and character performances, which are amazing throughout.

HM: Joker

Joker

I feel I may get some criticism for my opinion on this film. That being said, I did enjoy the film, the visuals are great and strong performances throughout. However, it is a general feeling that puts the film lower on my list, it feels like the films dispises the source material and attempt to strongly downplay any Joker related source material. I did see the twist coming but only because of the strong mental illness themes, which I do praise for the inclusion. To sum up, it is a good film but not one of my favourites.

5.Crawl

Crawl

Crawl is a simple premise but is executed beautifully, with many thrills and chills from start to finish. Admittedly, once the father, daughter team finally escape crawl space under their home, the film becomes slightly more fantastical than in the opening. However, it is still a brilliant throwback to old school creature features and a must-see for fans of those films.

4. Shazam!

Shazam

Shazam is the shot in the arm that the DCEU needed to bring interest back into their universe and finally brought a Superman into the world that they sorely need, which is ironic based on the history between the two characters. The film is a fun time throughout and left a smile on my face from start to end. Zachary Levi is a perfect fit for Shazam and makes you believe that he is a 14-year-old boy in the body of a god. it quickly became my favourite film within the DCEU.

3. I am Mother

I-Am-Mother-movie-poster

I am Mother is the tensest film I have watched in 2019. As we follow ‘Daughter’ we slowly learn how this new world works, and slowly question the ones keeping her safe, and is it as safe as first thought. The tone is reminiscent of 10 Cloverfield Lane, which is fantastic and builds on it as everyone other than ‘Daughter’ has their own agenda, who is very innocent and naive and is torn between these two figures. If you’re a fan of post-apocalypse fiction then I am Mother is a must-see.

2. Jojo Rabbit

jojorabbit

What can I say that I haven’t already said in my review for Jojo Rabbit? It is a fantastic film with darkly funny humour and a lovely message about understanding. There is not a weak performance within the cast and a film that everyone should see.

1.Avengers Endgame

null

Avengers Endgame is the culmination of 11 years of the MCU and is a definite victory lap for the MCU as they revisit different points throughout their continuity. Anyone that knows me, will not be surprised that this is my favourite film. It is exactly what we needed to help springboard the next phase of the universe. Plus that end battle scene is amazing all on its own!

Jojo Rabbit Review

Jojo Rabbit Review

Jojo Rabbit is written and directed by Taika Waititi (Thor Ragnarok; What we do in the Shadows) and stars Scarlet Johansson (Avengers, Her), Sam Rockwell (Moon, Seven Psychopaths), Roman Griffin Davis and Thomasin McKenzie (The King, Nori Roller Coaster Boy), and is a fantastic and dark depiction of a German town during the final year of World Wars 2. It contains strong performances throughout as Jojo (Roman Griffin Davis) navigates his way through the world with a Jewish girl (Thomasin McKenzie) hiding in his home and an imaginary Hitler (Taika Waititi).

Spoilers for Jojo Rabbit

Brody-JojoRabbit

The film opens with Jojo attending a Hitler Youth retreat to learn the skills a loyal German man needs to serve their country, overseen by Captain Klenzendorf (Sam Rockwell), Fraulein Rahm (Rebel Wilson) and Finkel (Alfie Allen). In an unfortunate incident, Jojo is severely and sent home to his mother (Scarlett Johansson) who attempts to comfort him and convince him that the Nazi’s ideal is wrong. Jojo helps the local German soldiers, now led by a demoted Captain Klenzendorf, with menial tasks in order to feel useful. It isn’t long before he finds a Jewish girl named Elsa (Thomasin McKenzie) hiding in his house. She convinces him not to tell anyone or else his mother will be in trouble, especially when he learns she is the one hiding Elsa. Jojo gets to know Elsa over the course of the film and slowly learns the Nazi’s aren’t right. After Jojo finds his mother dead he gets conscripted to fend off the American soldiers before they lose. He escapes and lets Elsa out of the house as they try to find their way in the new world post World War 2.

Gessen-JojoRabbit

The film is darkly funny one moment and heart-wrenching the next, it is a hard tight rope to walk but the film walks it beautifully. It holds a simple message of understanding and compassion for others, which unfortunately is a message that still needs to be reinforced today. There were no weak performances throughout the film and everyone felt believable in this bleak part of history.

Arrowverse’s Crisis on Infinite Earths Review

Arrowverse’s Crisis on Infinite Earths Review

Spoilers for the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event including; Supergirl S5 E9, Batwoman S1 E9, Flash S6 E9, Arrow S8 E8, and Legends of Tomorrow S5 E1.

arrowverse-crisis-on-infinite-earths-1199124-1280x0

With the end of the annual Arrowverse crossover, this year’s Crisis on Infinite Earths has reshaped the landscape for the heroes and villains of the world and introduced a very comic book element to TV views, a line-wide rebut. A short spoiler-free review is that the crossover was very ambitious and overall meet those ambitions and exceeded them in some respects. The stakes were high with some long-lasting repercussions and included many fun and very unexpected cameos with strong acting from all involved.

Crisis part 5

The Crisis event opens with the Anti-matter wave, that has destroyed universe after universe, heading towards Argo city of Earth 38 (Supergirl’s universe). There is nothing either Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) or Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) can do to prevent it’s destruction as the wave marches towards Earth 38. Fortunately, the Monitor (LaMonica Garrett) saves both Superman and Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tulloch), who had sent their son away in a ship believing they were going to die. The Monitor summons various heroes from Earth 1 including Green Arrow (Stephen Amell), Batwoman (Ruby Rose), Flash (Grant Gustin) and White Canary (Caity Lotz) among others. He explains that the Anti-Monitor (LaMonica Garrett) is attempting to destroy the multiverse and replace it with his own Anti-matter universe. The group splits into several teams as they attempt to fend off the Anti-monitor’s forces and save as many people as possible, while Lois and a small group travel to another Earth to save baby John. After the destruction of Earth 38, the remaining heroes start jumping from earth to earth to find the seven paragons needed to defeat the Anti-monitor with many fun and unexpected cameos from long-forgotten TV shows and film franchises. Meanwhile, Lex Luthor (Jon Cryer) of Earth 38 has been resurrected and has stolen the book of destiny, jumping from earth to earth killing as many Supermen as possible. After finding all seven paragons the heroes fail to prevent the death of the multiverse and the paragons are sent to the vanishing point, a place outside of time and space. The Spector appears and summons the paragons to the dawn of time to battle the Anti-monitor and reignite the multiverse. The paragons succeed, at the cost of Green Arrow’s life, and the multiverse is remade, with some changes. Earth 1 and Earth 38 have become folded into Earth prime with Black Lightning (Cress Williams) also on the same earth. Before the heroes can come to grips with Oliver’s death the Anti-monitor returns for one last attack before being shrunken down into the micro-verse until the end of time.

The Pros

Each episode was gripping as they opened with a different Earth as they are destroyed, this provides a sense of wonder in how the characters would survive this apocalyptic event. Every actor brings they’re A-game to the event and work hard to sell every scene on screen. Overall, it was a successful event with the five-part event feeling like one long film more or less. The biggest highlight was the wide and far-reaching range of cameos from beloved classics like Burt Ward as Robin (Earth 66), to unexpected deep cuts like Ashley Scott as Helena Kyle/Huntress (Earth-203) and John Wesley Shipp as Barry Allen/Flash (Earth-90). My person favourites were Tom Ellis as Lucifer Morningstar (Earth 666) acting against Matt Ryan as John Constantine (Earth 1) in a fantastic scene that would have both Lucifer and Constantine fans cry out for a new TV series featuring the two characters if not more crossovers between the two. Kevin Conroy as an antagonistic Bruce Wayne (Earth 99) in his first live-action portrayal of the character and Brandon Routh returning to his Superman portrayal (Earth 96) were both fantastic and brilliant extensions to their previous depictions of the characters.

Crisis-Part-1-700x300

The Cons

Despite the overwhelming positives, there are some negatives to mention. Chifley and this is a result of the event is the sum total of five different shows rather than one long film but in parts three and five it was very clear it was another episode of the Flash and Legends respectively as more of their casts appear where they were not involved before. Flash is the biggest proprietor of this as Hartley Sawyer as Ralph Dibny/Elongated Man stands around the Waverider doing nothing before being shuffled off on a side plot and Danielle Panabaker as Caitlin Snow/Frost and  Carlos Valdes as Cisco Ramon/Vibe appear to simply support Flash emotionally as they attempt to stop the Anti-monitor’s Anti-matter cannon. The other main issue is many characters from the various shows simply don’t appear such as Katie Cassidy’s Laurel Lance (Earth 2) who seemed to have an important role after season 8 of Arrow and Tom Cavanagh as Reverse-Flash (Earth 1) which was especially disappointing after his appearance in Crisis on Earth X as he informed the Flash that he would see him in the next crisis. However, the many cameos do distract from the lack of these characters as it wasn’t until after the event ended that their lack of an appearance was noticeable.

Crisis-CW-Logo-740x400

Crisis on Infinite Earths was an ambitious project that met the expectations of fans the world over. It is the Arrowverse’s magnum opus bringing together every character within its own world and many more from previous depictions of DC characters. It has left many fans weighting with bated breath for next years crossover, wondering how they will top Crisis on Infinite Earths.

Über my surprise favourite comic

Über my surprise favourite comic

Über is a comic series written by Kieron Gillen (Darth Vader; Young Avengers; The Wicked + The Divine) with Caanan White (Ptolus: City by the Spire; R.R.H.), Gabriel Andrade (Crossed Badlands; Ferals) and Daniel Gete (Crossed: Dead or Alive; Logan’s Run: Last Day) as rotating artists and published by Avatar Press.

1436792

The series begins in April 1945 with the Soviet Union closing in on Berlin in what we know as the last days of the Western front. However, unbeknownst to anyone including the German hierarchy, three Übers step in and hold off the assault turning the battle in the German’s favour and placing the Allied forces on the on the back foot even though they don’t know it yet.

2958926-00

From there the war continues in a chaotic manner with the Germans slowly expanding their hold and regaining lost ground. While the Allies scramble to match the German’s superhuman superiority. With events like the battle of Paris and “The Second London Blitz” highlighting the sheer power of the Übers.

4133645-uber+#0+-+page+4

The comic series is not for the faint of heart. It is brutal in its depiction of war but also faithful to the events of World War 2, not trying to romance any historical figure. From Churchhill’s excessive alcohol intake to Hitler’s ego and arrogance.

DIG010506_1._SX360_QL80_TTD_

The power of the Übers and McGuffin of the comic is the catalyst. A mysterious red substance that enhances 1 in 5,000 people and killing the others. I won’t speculate on where it comes from as at the time of writing I only read the first 16 issues and don’t know if it is explained later or in the following series Über: Invasion.

rsz_uber_4110

For anyone looking to read something different from the regular superhero comics, I would highly recommend the series. It uses familiar powers, in super strength and energy manipulation, but uses them in a different way to tell an alternate history in a more brutal and realistic way. The characters are endearing in their own twisted way, you may not agree with them but you understand why they are doing what they do.

A Dark Reflection

A Dark Reflection

Hi I know I’ve been gone for a while. I just thought I’d post this short story that I’ve written. It is a dark story in the vein of old-school Brother’s Grimm. I hope you like it and thank you for your time.

Susan is a perfect student. She is loved by all of her peers and her teachers alike. Her test scores are always high and her spare time is filled with extra-curricular. Everyone agrees that she has a bright future ahead of her. Her grades predict that she will be attending a well-respected university on her own merit and from there the world will be her oyster. There is only one problem. She is deeply unhappy with her life. She understands that she needs to put her best foot forward to do well in life. However, she feels that this is not her life. She is a puppet for her father’s unfilled dreams. She remembers when her school let them pick their subjects for the following year. She wanted to study Art and Photography. Susan always preferred the more creative classes as she felt that she could express herself. Her father, however, ignored her and told her that studying subjects like Maths, English, and Science will give her a better chance to attend Harvard. She knew he was right but she did not want to attend Harvard. The university never appealed to her, but her father had the final word and now she is top of her Maths and English class and is on track to Harvard.

The day had been long and Susan was tired of staring at Maths equations. Every time she closed her eyes she could see the Pythagoras theorem carved into the back of her eyelids. Her mother had prepared Lasagne for tea with a garlic bread on the side. She hated Italian food, it always left her feeling bloated. The bread smell filled her nostrils and her stomach moaned. If she didn’t eat it her dad would be upset about wasting food. The food budget was always tight and her dad blamed that on the fact he did not attend university and progress to a higher paid job. He had always wanted to be a lawyer, he had hoped that he could practice in corporate law helping one company absorb a smaller company, incorporating their assets.

Susan knew he secretly blamed her for the fact that he didn’t go to university. When her parents were receiving their final grades, her mother had taken her own test and not told him. She was pregnant with Susan. Her father, David was thrilled at first, he had always wanted children but his wish had come sooner than he thought. He promised that he would stay and help Linda, her mother, to raise Susan. He did not want to abandon his future wife and child as his father had. Susan could often see him contemplate the road less traveled. Now he has worked his way to an assistant manager role at their local convenience store. He was well respected by his colleagues but he resented the job believing that he could do better.

Her mother, Lilian, had taken on the maternal roles of raising Susan while her husband worked. She was content with her life, unlike her husband, taking pride in her daughter. As Susan grew older and began school she took on part-time work in their local bakery. It had unlocked a passion in her as she loved the smell of fresh bread and the sweet taste of fresh cakes. This passion made her a bright light to her husband’s dark internal resentment.

They ate their meal with little conversation. Susan did not want to draw her father’s attention to avoid the usual interrogation about her school work. He was trying to instill a competitive nature in her but it just pushed further into her own misery. She quickly finished her food and excused herself and returned to her room.

“Don’t start anything too time-consuming, you have Karate practice in an hour.” Her father called after her with an authoritative tone.

“I promise I won’t, I’m just going to brush my hair.”

“Again? You do that every night?”

“I’ll be quick.” She quickly retreated to her room and planted herself on the foot of her bed in front of her mirror.

Susan knew every inch of her mirror. The chips in the white paint, the small splinters in the edges of the frame. It was an old mirror but she loved it regardless. Every day she would ritualistically clean the reflective surface with Stardrops window and glass cleaner. The blue liquid cut through any grime that might appear, not that she gave it a chance. She spent every spare moment in front of it. She was not a vain person but it allowed her to look into herself and escape the world.

She could not help but rush her hair in front of it. As she would brush her hair it was as if she was brushing away the pressures of everyday life. She was free. Her worries and lack of control melted away as she would try different hairstyles. Sometimes three different styles a day. Normally she would be left alone only breaking her independence when she was summoned by her father or mother to attend another charity role or work experience.

Today was different. Today her father wanted to talk to her.

David walked into her room unannounced. It was nothing new but normally she heard him coming and could put her shoes on ready. Today she felt exposed with her brush in one hand and several strands of hair in the other.

“Why are you wasting time?” he asked in an accusatory tone.

“I thought we have spare time before karate practice?” Susan knew it was a weak answer but she could not think of anything else.

“You know it takes thirty minutes to get to the gym.” He was getting irritated now. “Besides, you’re going to tighten it up for practice. You could use that time to revise for your next exam.”

“I just thought…”

“You didn’t think though. You have every opportunity available and you want to waste time staring at yourself in a mirror.” He yelled.

Susan was speechless. David had always been tough on her to pusher her harder, but he had never yelled at her. Each word was another slash at her character. She just stared in disbelieve and this only angered him further.

“What?! You don’t have anything to say for yourself? Good. Next time I come up here I was to see you in your Gi ready to go to practice.” She just nodded at his orders.

David could not think of another word to say. He frustratedly stormed out of the room and slammed Susan’s door as he left.

Susan just stared at the door still trying to take in what happened. Then she heard it. A crash of glass and splintering wood. She turned to see the shattered glass spread across her room. Small pieces had cut her bare ankle. The cut was so small she barely noticed it. She was mesmerized by the broken glass. It reflected her broken spirit in every shard. Her sight began to blur as tears welled up in her eyes. She held them back but the sight of her parents bursting into her room to ask what happened broke her.

A few days had passed since her mirror fell off the wall. The pieces had been cleared away quickly and her mother saw to her bloody ankle. It did not need stitches and her parents were grateful for that. Susan did not care. Without her mirror, she has slowly sunk deeper into herself with not release from the pressure. It was all building up on top of her. Everyone noticed, even her father. He had apologized for losing his temper, only after her mother had shouted at him and put him in his place. It did not help. Not until he picked her up from school.

“Hey, kiddo.”

“Hey” her voice was hollow.

Susan sat in the passenger seat of her father’s beaten up hatchback. It was like the family dog. Everyone loved it and it was always there for the family. It was there during Susan’s birth and her first day of school. It took them on their family road trips and carried both parents to work. It was a safe place for Susan. Now it felt like a prison bus taking her from one cell to another.

“How was school today?” her father always struggled to make small talk, he thought it was a waste of time, it seemed like he was in agony today.

Good,” she thought. “Nothing new. Mr. Armstrong was talking about reflection and refraction. The light prism was pretty cool.”

“That really cool. Anything else?”

Susan knew something was wrong. David always asked how school was but he would ask with more intensity. Looking for more detail to make sure Susan had understood the lessons.

“Dad.”

“Yes, honey?”

“What’s wrong you’re acting weird.”

He let out a nervous sigh. He knew he had been caught out by his daughter. Susan bet he wished that she wasn’t as smart right now.

“I just want you to know I’m sorry about your mirror. I didn’t mean to break it.”

There it was. He was sorry, was he joking? He has no idea how much it meant to her. It was the one thing to escape the pressure, and he took it away.

Susan did not believe his apology. Her father was not known for apologizing. Not until that day. She will always remember that apology and how it ruined everything.

It took a moment before Susan noticed that they were not driving home. “Where are we?”

“I’m going to make it up to you.”

The car pulled up outside of an antique shop with lots of different knick knacks displayed in the store window. A sense of confusion and excitement welled up inside of her stomach as if butterflies were trying to escape. Susan joyed repurposing older items. It lent into her more creative side that she would have to suppress. Did her father actually know something about her? Or had her mother told him about the store as a way to bend bridges between then two of them? Regardless Susan was speechless.

“I was thinking we could find you a nice mirror to bring your room together. We could even touch up the paint if need be.”

They entered the store with a bell announcing their presence. An elderly woman in her mid-sixties is stood behind the wooden counter with an old-fashioned metal till in front of her.

“Hello, how can I help you today?” Her voice was sweet and tender. It warmed Susan, helping to lift her spirits.

“We were hoping to you might have a mirror,” Her father replied while inspecting the dust that had built up in the corner of the room.

“I have a few in the back if you’d like to look.”

“Go have a look, Susan, I’ll stay here.”

She needed no further prompting. Susan slipped into the back and began inspecting the woman’s stock before reaching the mirrors. The room was filled with many old and bizarre items, with everything from a 1920’s camera with a cracked lens to pot lizard standing on its hind legs, the paint had faded even though it looks like the statue hadn’t seen sunlight in years.

At the end of the room stood four different mirrors stood side by side. The first had a small crack in the frame. Susan could not help but picture the frame snapping him half as they tried to leave the store with it. The second was smaller than her original mirror and was an oversized makeup mirror. The third mirror held promise. It was slightly bigger than her original mirror with a thick wooden frame, it was unpainted but that would just give her the opportunity to play with the frame. Finally, the fourth mirror had a floral patterned white frame, it was slightly smaller than her broken frame. It was closest to her original frame but there was a weird feeling deep in her stomach that pulled her attention away from them and to a draped figure on the other side of the room.

As she stepped closer she could see a large dust-covered cloth draped over a large looming silhouette. Closer inspection revealed a wooden stand below the cloth. Curious Susan pulled the cloth away revealing a large freestanding mirror with an intricately designed crown adorned the top of the frame. The wooden frame was a coral colour with delicate floral designs in each corner. It stood feet high with the width of a door. It was perfect.

Susan began to turn to find her father before she catches a figure in the corner of the mirror. She stared into her reflection for a few minutes and nothing happened. She decided it was her mind playing a trick on her and left it to retrieve her father.

Moments later David was pulling the freestanding mirror up to the counter. “How much for this mirror?”

The room felt a cold chill as a look of horror crept across the elderly woman’s face. “Where did you find that?”

“It was in the back of the room under a cloth, so does fifty dollars cover it?”

“Are you sure you want this mirror?” her voice held a hint of fear.

David was beginning to get irritated, “Of course we want this mirror. How much?”

“Fifty is fine, please take it.”

Susan and her father share a look before he paid the woman. They left the store as quickly as possible and Susan could have sworn she heard the door lock behind them but she paid no attention to it. They drove home with excitement building up in Susan. She could not wait to place it in her room and return to her own space to unwind.

They arrived home and between the two of them, the managed to carry it up the stairs and place it in the corner of her room facing the door. “Thank you.”

Her father looked sheepish, it was a strange look on him. “You’re welcome, sweetheart. I hope it makes you feel better.” He gives her a sweet smile before walking to the door. “Dinner will be ready soon don’t take too long.”

“I won’t I promise.” Her father left the room and Susan ran over to her mirror and began brushing her hair.

The stress began to seep away, but it was slowly replaced by unease. As she looked at herself in the mirror her reflection began to smile a twisted smile. “It must be a trick of the light.

“There is no trick here.” An echoey voice emanated from the mirror. Susan looked around the room and nothing was any different from that morning. She looked back and her reflection was waving back at her before it placed its hand against the glass.

Susan was completely creeped out but still felt a compulsion to match up to her reflection. She placed her hand on the glass and she began to feel cold. All heat had left the room, the unease in her stomach grew stronger.

The reflection pulled its hand away and its smile grew wider. “Thank you.”

Her unease turned to dread. Her reflection was talking to her. Something was wrong. A distant voice called to her. “Susan. Dinner’s ready.”

She heard her own voice but she didn’t say anything. “I’ll be down in a minute.” It was her reflection.

“What…”

The reflection stood up and walked towards the door before turning back to the mirror. “You should have appreciated what you had. Now it’s my turn.”

The door closed slowly leaving Susan in isolation. She began banging on the glass screaming for help and her parents. The cold crept over her and the realization dawned on her. She was trapped and no one will ever notice.

Falling Skies Season 1 Retrospective Review

Falling Skies Season 1 Retrospective Review

Falling Skies was an American TV show that aired from 2011-2015. I’ve recently watched the first season on Netflix and I loved it. The setting has us follow a rag tag resistance regiment after the alien invasion. The characters are living from day to day learning as they go along, which allows us to learn alongside them.

The show takes us into the grit and carnage of an alien invasion and it pulls few punches. Kids have been kidnapped and ‘harnessed’, a process of controlling the children, cities have been destroyed and people die left right and center. Besides this, the characters try to stay strong and fight for their survival and to live another day.

falling-skies

The show feels like Walking Dead but with aliens, however, the fact that the enemy is sentient allows for the show to explore deeper and darker elements of survival. Such as the aliens making a PTSD ridden woman to trade information for supplies.

Mech

The show is an exciting look into human nature and what someone will do to survive in the fall of civilization. I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone that is looking a series to sink their teeth into. I cannot wait to watch the next 4 seasons and hope it keeps up the standard it has already set.

Al Ewing for a Deadpool Comic

Al Ewing for a Deadpool Comic

Hi Guys,

After reading Rocket #4 recently, I cannot help but think that Al Ewing (Ultimates, Judge Dredd: Trifecta) would make an awesome writer for the ongoing Deadpool series or one of the Deadpool mini series that keep happening.

Rocket #4

In just an issue he managed to capture the sad clown nature that Gerry Duggan (Arkham Manor, Uncanny Avengers) has taken the character into over the last four years. Not only that but he was able to make the issue an honorary in Nick Spencer’s (Astonishing Ant-man, Bedlam) Secret Empire tie-in even though it wasn’t necessary but he made it seamless.

Deadpool

Marvel Al Ewing stories have a soft spot in my heart as he is able to make you care for the most obscure of characters in comics like New Avengers and Contest of Champions. Not only that he has the ability to tell stories with such scope and heart like his run on Ultimates and MightyAvengers/Captain America and the Mighty Avengers.

I could not tell you what type of story he would tell because he is able to jump in and out of multiple genres but I would be the first in line to buy it.

Sorry I’ve Been Away

Sorry I’ve Been Away

To all those that may be reading (I know you’re out there),

I know I haven’t posted anything in a long while, sorry. I’ve struggled to think of different posts and didn’t want to just to list posts (Though I’m not opposed to them).

I thought I’d make this post to say I’m still alive if any of you were worried and that I will be posting irregularly (which probably isn’t a shock at this point). The idea behind this is so I can post about stuff that I feel I need to write about and not feel bad about the lack of content.

Thank you for reading!

Is Edna Mode a reformed Supervillain?

Is Edna Mode a reformed Supervillain?

Edna Mode is an amazing character that stole the hearts of everyone with her few brief appearances. However recent theories have speculated that Edna is a reformed supervillain and today we will look at some of the reasons Edna might be a supervillain.

Edna Mode’s Facility

edna home

Rather than regular gates, Enda’s home has laser gates something resembling a lair of a villain from a James Bond movie. Furthermore, when her security system thought Elastigirl was an intruder, the system tired to kill Elastigirl with a sentry gun. I know Edna is a bit eccentric but it makes more sense if you think of her as a former supervillain. In addition, the methods in which, Edna tests the durability of the Parr family super suits is cool none the less but also screams supervillain.

Contempt for her Guards

edna modes guards

Many supervillains don’t like their underlings e.g. The Joker, Penguin, but Enda seems to have some extra contempt for them like she doesn’t want them there at all. It would be reasonable to assume that is the Government is monitoring heroes that they would also monitor villains too, and might even place guards to make sure she doesn’t do anything to threaten the world. Plus why would a fashion designer need guards for?

Jack-Jack’s Outfit

Jack jack suit

Edna designed a suit for Jack-Jack with various retardants as she didn’t know his power set, even though Helen claimed he had no powers. But how would she know things like the suit needed to withstand 1000 degrees? Was she spying on the Parr family? Maybe we will never know.

A Villain’s Mind

Designing Jack-Jack’s suit almost shows forethought about villain’s intention. Did she know that Syndrome would try to kidnap Jack-Jack? She was one step ahead of him in the aid of the Parr family. She claims to be looking for a thrill, that is why she designed the hero costumes. Many villains get bored easily and pry into the lives of the heroes.

Her Dress Sense

Edna is dressed like a modern twist on many Disney villains. She had the cigarette holder much like Cruella Deville and the colour scheme of villains like Maleficent and the Evil Queen.

So what do you think of the theory? Do you like it or think it holds any weight? Let me know in the comments or on twitter.
