With the new Mass Effect Andromeda just released I thought it would be a good idea to look back at the original trilogy and look some of my favourite moments. Before I start this was a hard list to make as Mass Effect is my favourite game franchise of all time so picking ten moments so super difficult.

10. Garrus Side Mission (ME1)

garrus

Back in the original Mass Effect if you spoke to Garrus after each mission he will reveal bits and pieces about his time in C-sec and about his family. At one point he will talk about a cold case where the perpetrator got away due to C-sec red tape. He now has the location on the criminal and requests Shepard’s help in closing the case. It is only a side mission that is easily skippable but for me, it is an interesting insight on Garrus and a moment to help mold his character. It also taps into my love of crime thrillers.

 9. Mordin Singing (ME2)

modrin-song

Mordin Solus is a fun and complex character, a Salarian Doctor that wants to do as many good deeds as possible before he dies. He has lived a long life in forty years he has done everything from strengthening the Genophage to singing Gilbert and Sullivan. In Mass Effect 2 if you talk to Mordin enough he will give you a rendition of Gilbert and Sullivan if you ask him to. It is one of the happiest moments within the Mass Effect Trilogy.

8. Meeting the Flotilla (ME2)

flotilla

After talking to Tali during the events of the Mass Effect, she paints quite the picture of Quarian life and culture. Questions arose in my mind like what would it looking like for an entire species to traverse the galaxy aimlessly. It was a sight to see the Flotilla with my own eyes, the scale was epic. The mission on the Flotilla is both thought-provoking in terms of how AI should be treated and tragic when you investigate the Quarian deaths. Bonus it’s always fun to bring Legion along for the mission if you enjoy dark humour that is.

7. Battle for the Citidal (ME1)

battle-for-citadel-me1

The battle for the Citidal (the first time) is the culmination of all of your efforts in the first game. From Feros to Virmire everything has led you to this epic space battle. The forces of the Alliance against the Geth and Sovereign is first space battle in the trilogy and it does not disappoint.

6. Thresher Maw fights Reaper (ME3)

thresher-maw-vs-reaper

The Mother of all Thresher Maw (Kalros) is a creature all Krogan fear and she does not like the Reapers on her planet. When Kalros gets involved in the conflict it is reminiscent of Kaiju battles from old monster movies. It is a jaw-dropping moment and an epic scene to watch.

5. Battle for Earth (ME3)

battle-for-earth

The battle for Earth is like the battle for the Citidal ramped up to eleven. The measure of your forces, and therefore the scope of the battle will depend on how many allies you will have gained throughout Mass Effect 3. Your Armada can rival the forces of the Reapers matching them blow for blow with the different ship types and battle maneuvers it is a fleet the galaxy has never known and will never match again.

4. Banshee reveal (ME3)

banshee

The Banshees are horrifying twisted versions of the Asari that the Reapers turned into they monsters. The entire mission plays out like a horror movie, as your team traverse the site in the dark with no signs of life. The facility echoes and creeks as you look for survivors of the attack. Eventually, you stumble across Samara who reveals what has happened. Only for the Banshee to reveal itslef with a blood curdling scream with becomes a staple of the monster.

3. Thane introduction (ME2)

Thane.png

The mission to recruit Thane is a non-stop battle from the bottom of a town all the way to the top, Raid style. Throughout the fight to the top, you hear stories from some of the survivors of a being moving fast and killing mechs, but no-one knows what the being looks like. Eventually, when you reach the penthouse you meet an Asari named Nassana, who believes you’re trying to kill her. Nassana and her guards aim their weapons at you only to have Thane silently drop from a vent in the ceiling and systematically kills each of the guards and then Nassana. It is easy to see why the Illusive Man told you to recruit him.

2. Grunt versus Husk Army (ME3)

grunt-is-krogaaan

When Shepard aids Grunt with investigating a Rachni nest. regardless of the choices you make on the mission, it ends with a point where Grunt offers to sacrifice himself give Shepard and his team a chance to escape. It leads to an epic fight where Grunt single-handedly fights off a husk horde. It is an epic battle, to say the least, but if you didn’t gain his loyalty in the previous game he will die a warrior’s death, but if he survives he will limp out covered in blood asking for food.

1. Suicide Mission (ME2)

suicide-mission

What else could it be, The suicide mission is an awesome mission with multiple opportunities to lose squad members if you didn’t gain their loyalty or upgrade the ship enough. Plus when you get to the Collector base it truly feels like a high-stakes mission no matter how many times I play it.

Tell me some of your favourite moments from the Mass Effect triology in the comments below or tweet them at me I’d love to hear them.
